INSTALL.MSI
______________________________________________________________
WELCOME!
In this file you will find:
1. Quick-Start Instructions
2. Complete Installation Details
See the MSI?.DOC files for complete operating instructions.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to read the sections marked -->> below.
-->> Quick-Start:
MSI will install itself and modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT to ensure
proper operation from ANY drive or directory on your computer
system.
If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is write protected then you will
need to read instruction #2 on the next page. Otherwise, you
only need to follow these few steps to install MSI and make it
fully operational.
If you are not familiar with DOS Batch Commands you should
allow the Installation Utility to modify AUTOEXEC.BAT. A
back-up copy of the file, AUTOEXEC.BAK, will be created BEFORE
any changes are made.
In the directory containing your MSI files, type:
RUNMSI (RETURN)
The Installation Utility will appear. Just press RETURN if
the Drive and Directory path are correct. You should then
allow the Utility to continue and modify AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you
do you will be asked if the menus should appear when your
system is first turned on, or re-booted. If so, MSI will add
'RUNMSI' as the last command in the file.
-->> *MANUALLY* INSTALLING MSI:
The following instructions show you how to:
1. Create an MSIPATH specification so that MSI can locate
important files from anywhere on your system.
2. Create a HOME.DIR file to allow MSI Menu options set to
'Action' to operate correctly.
-->> 1. 'SET' the PATH and MSIPATH specifications.
An Installation Utility is provided that will modify your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set these DOS environment variable for
you. The following is provided ONLY for those who prefer to
edit the file by hand.
Beginning with version 1.5, a Home directory may be defined
for the MSI data and print files using the DOS 'SET' command.
SET MSIPATH=Drive:\Full\Path
For example, adding
SET MSIPATH=C:\MSI
to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file commands allows the menus stored on
drive C:, sub-directory MSI, to be re-configured from any
drive and/or directory on your computer system.
Likewise, adding the path to the DOS variable PATH allows DOS
to locate the MSI batch and program files, regardless of the
current drive and/or directory when they are called.
PATH=C:\MSI
-->> 2. Create HOME.DIR
! The following instructions are intended ONLY for those who
have a good working knowledge of DOS and unusual installation
requirements.
An Installation Utility is provided that will do this job for
you. The Utility creates a file, HOME.DIR, that stores the
'home' drive and directory information needed to return to MSI
after an 'Action' or 'Dual' menu item is selected.
MSI needs to know how to get back to the disk and directory
containing RUNMSI.BAT when returning from an application or a
set of Action Commands. If HOME.DIR is not created, or if it
does not point to the drive and directory that contain
RUNMSI.BAT, you may get a repeating
"Invalid command or file name"
message from DOS when returning from a program.
Use your word processor or editor to create a file called
HOME.DIR in your installation directory.
1. Put the DRIVE LETTER of your installation drive on the
first line, followed by a colon (:).
C:
2. On the next line use the Change Directory command to
tell DOS to goto the installation directory.
CD C:\MSI
Be sure to use a full pathname.
FOR EXAMPLE:
If you've installed MSI on an F drive, in a sub-directory
off of a directory called UTILITY, HOME.DIR should contain
these two lines:
F:
CD F:\UTILITY\MSI
-->> NOTE: Version 1.5 and later include an Installation Utility.
However, if the file HOME.DIR is found in the current
directory when MSI is first run, the Utility will assume the
program has already been installed. Shared copies may include
the file HOME.DIR. IN THIS CASE, run the program, enter the
Menus Editor (F5) and press CTRL-F6 to re-install MSI to YOUR
installation drive and directory.
